Hand Holding.
Personally I think that hand holding is important. It is a small gesture in the grand scheme of things but not so small in the meaning of things. Shakespeare even writes a scene between Romeo and Juliet-
Romeo:
If I profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand
To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.
Juliet:
Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,
Which mannerly devotion shows in this;
For saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers’ kiss.
Romeo:
Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?
Juliet:
Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.
Romeo:
O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do;
They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.
Juliet:
Saints do not move, though grant for prayers’ sake.
Romeo:
Then move not, while my prayer’s effect I take.
Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.
Juliet:
Then have my lips the sin that they have took.
Romeo:
Sin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged!
Give me my sin again.
Juliet:
You kiss by the book.”
Modern English-
Romeo:Your hand is like a holy place that my hand is unworthy to visit. If you’re offended by the touch of my hand, my two lips are standing here like blushing pilgrims, ready to make things better with a kiss.
(THE FIRST FOURTEEN LINES ROMEO AND JULIET SPEAK TOGETHER FORM A SONNET.)
Juliet: Good pilgrim, you don’t give your hand enough credit. By holding my hand you show polite devotion. After all, pilgrims touch the hands of statues of saints. Holding one palm against another is like a kiss.
ROMEO:Don’t saints and pilgrims have lips too?
JULIET:Yes, pilgrim—they have lips that they’re supposed to pray with.
ROMEO:Well then, saint, let lips do what hands do. I’m praying for you to kiss me. Please grant my prayer so my faith doesn’t turn to despair.
JULIET:Saints don’t move, even when they grant prayers.
ROMEO:Then don’t move while I act out my prayer.
He Kisses Her.
Now my sin has been taken from my lips by yours.
JULIET:Then do my lips now have the sin they took from yours?
ROMEO:Sin from my lips? You encourage crime with your sweetness. Give me my sin back.
They Kiss Again.
Many would argue that Romeo and Juliet where fated to be together- Star crossed lovers. Romeo literally says:”Your hand is like a holy place that my hand is unworthy to visit.”
I think that Juliet really sums it up by saying:”You don’t give your hand enough credit. By holding my hand you show polite devotion. After all, pilgrims touch the hands of statues of saints. Holding one palm against another is like a kiss.”
Hand holding is over looked and really shouldn’t be. It takes a lot of courage to hold someones hand. You only do that with people you really like- parents, best friends, partners.
If a person wants to hold my hand it shows to me that they want to symbolise to others how they feel.
Holding hands releases oxytocin in your brain, boosting you and your partner’s bond. Isn’t this reason enough to hold hands? to boost the bond between you.
Holding hands is important because it says to me that that they don’t care about touching me. That they do not mind showing the world that they want to touch me. That they want to be with me. That they feel some type of emotion towards me.
Hand holding is even more important to me because people are losing the art of holding a hand. People would rather go straight fucking. They don’t build up the tension. Build up the touch.
I respect a partner more when they understand and take the time. They chose to do this. They take the time for themselves as well. It makes me respect me and them more.
I could go on and I’m finding it difficult to explain. It’s just REALLY REALLY important to me.
Just keep holding hands people.
